Haemoglobin
The protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. Low Hb (anaemia) often causes tiredness and breathlessness.
Ferritin
Your body's iron storage protein — think 'iron fuel tank'. Low ferritin is the earliest sign of iron deficiency, even before anaemia shows.
Vitamin D
Sunlight-vitamin, also helps absorb calcium for bone strength. Deficiency is extremely common in India, can cause fatigue and bone aches.
Vitamin B12
Needed for healthy nerves and red blood cells. Vegetarians often run low. Symptoms include tingling, fatigue, and memory issues.
TSH
A hormone from your brain that tells the thyroid how hard to work. High TSH = thyroid is sluggish (hypothyroid). Low TSH = overactive (hyperthyroid).
Free T4
The main hormone your thyroid produces. Doctors check this alongside TSH to see what your thyroid is actually doing.
HbA1c
Your average blood sugar over the last 2–3 months. Doctors prefer it to fasting sugar because it doesn't get fooled by what you ate that morning.
OGTT
A challenge test — drink 75 g glucose, measure sugar at 0, 1, and 2 hours. Standard test for gestational diabetes and unclear cases.
HBsAg
A blood marker showing active Hepatitis B infection. A positive test means the virus is present — requires specialist follow-up.
Frequently asked questions
What's tested in the first trimester?
Complete blood count, blood group + Rh typing, fasting sugar, TSH, urine routine, and infection screens (HIV, HBsAg, VDRL). Some doctors also add rubella IgG and thyroid antibodies. It's a comprehensive baseline for the pregnancy.
Why do I need a glucose challenge test?
Between 24 and 28 weeks, all pregnant women are screened for gestational diabetes with a 75g glucose challenge (OGTT). Gestational diabetes is very common in Indian women and needs to be caught early to protect both mother and baby.
My haemoglobin is 10.5. Is that anaemia in pregnancy?
Mildly low. The WHO threshold for anaemia in pregnancy is <11 g/dL. Your doctor will likely prescribe iron and folic acid supplementation and recheck in 4–6 weeks. Very common in Indian pregnancies and easy to treat.
