Frequently asked questions
What is a normal TSH?
Most labs use 0.45 to 4.5 µIU/mL as normal. But your target may be tighter in pregnancy (<2.5), on levothyroxine (0.5–2.5 is often the goal), or if you have symptoms. Always interpret with your doctor.
My TSH is high but T4 is normal. What does that mean?
Called 'subclinical hypothyroidism' — your thyroid is working slightly harder to keep hormone output normal. Depending on your TSH level, symptoms, and any pregnancy plans, your doctor may treat it or watch it.
How is thyroid medicine timing important?
Levothyroxine works best when taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food, tea, or coffee. Calcium and iron tablets should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Missing these rules is the most common reason people's TSH doesn't come down as expected.
